Many people have tried a box wine at least one time, and it was probably at a backyard barbecue or baby shower. The wine was pretty tasty, right? So, let’s discuss whether boxed wine is a good choice or a bad choice…
What is boxed wine? Simply stated, it is wine that comes in a box. The wine is actually packed in a plastic container and not directed in the cardboard box; that would be a hot, sticky mess!
There are stereotypes out there where some believe that boxed wines are cheap and not of good quality. I would say if you purchase the wrong boxed wine, then, yes, it could be cheap, bad tasting, and not of good quality. But, there are good-quality wines that come in a box that cost a lot less than some of the bottled wines and taste really good.
There are some situations where I would not recommend a boxed wine. Let’s say you are going to a dinner party and you want to take the hostess some wine. Would you take a nice bottle of wine or would you take a boxed wine? There are many answers to this question but the bottom line is that in our experience, a bottle of wine as a gift to thank the hostess for their efforts in cooking dinner and inviting you is much better than boxed wine.
Here are some pros and cons of boxed wine
Pros
- It costs less than bottled wine and you get more for your money. Most boxed wines have an equivalent of 4 bottles of wine. Now, if you bought four bottles of wine instead of the boxed wine, your pockets will be a little lighter; bottled wine costs more
- Boxed wine usually lasts up to 6 weeks after it is opened. Bottled wine has a much shorter lifespan
Cons
- There is not a huge selection for boxed wine like there is for bottled wine. You pretty much get what is out there.
- Boxed wine is not something that will be stored in someone’s cellar for aging. It only lasts about 2 years when stored unopened.
- There’s no fun in going for a search at the local wine store for a great find; it’s similar to searching through a thrift store or consignment store and finding that amazing item at a great price and then you go home and find out its worth! Winning!!!
