Wine 101 Basic Principles - Types of Wine

Wine is categorized into 5 different types. Within those types of wine, you get hundreds of grapes varieties and techniques for how wine is made. Here are the types:

  • Red Wine - Red Wine is made from dark grapes. This is how red wine gets its color. There are many types of red wine. The most popular types are Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Merlot.
  • White Wine - White wine is made without using the skin of the grapes. It is made from either white or red grapes. In most cases, it is made from light or pale-skinned grape varietals.
  • Rosé Wine - Rosé wine has a nice pink color and is made by allowing the skin from the red grapes to soak in the juice of the red grapes for a short time span (around 2 to 3 days). Any time longer would produce a darker, stronger wine.
  • Sparkling Wine - Sparkling wine contains high carbon dioxide levels. The carbon dioxide is what makes the wine frizzy or sparkling.
  • Dessert Wine - Dessert wine has a very high sweetness. The characteristic sweetness and high alcohol content of dessert wine make it difficult to include on a dinner party wine list and is usually served in glasses much smaller than the table wine due to the intense flavor as well as the high alcohol content.
